Cyber security experts say the risk of an attack on a company’s data networks is increasing.
But experts say they are concerned about the risks to a company and its staff.
The cyber attack on Sony Entertainment was one of the largest ever on the entertainment industry, damaging more than 600 million dollars worth of property and causing more than $1 billion in damage.
But cybersecurity experts say there’s still a lot of work to be done.
“It is one of those things that we have been thinking about for a long time and we have seen how it’s affected businesses,” said Matthew Green, a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“What we are finding in our research is that it is very difficult to protect from a cyberattack that could compromise a company.”
If a cyber attack is a one-time thing, then you don’t have to worry about a massive loss of data, and that’s why I think it’s important for companies to be on the defensive.
“A cyber attack would cause a huge amount of damage to the company’s systems, but there’s a chance the attack could be caught by the IT department and not taken seriously.
That’s because there is a good chance it won’t cause the company much damage.”
When you have an attack that’s not malicious, but actually a one time thing that could be a one year thing, it can happen and you might not even notice that it happened,” said Green.”
I think that’s one of our biggest issues as a society, is the amount of time it takes for businesses to be able to be protected.
“So, it’s a big issue for companies that have their systems compromised.
So, for example, if they have a data breach and the IT team is not able to recover it, then the companies can’t afford to be compromised.”
A recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte Consulting said the risk posed by a cyber-attack on a U.S. company could be far higher than previously estimated.
The report found that the cyber-threat posed by an attacker would have a “severe” impact on the business of a company in the event of an actual cyber-assault.
“Even if the data breach is isolated to the data center, a cyber attacker could cause significant damage to data centers across the company,” said Pricewaterhouses’ Matthew Green.
“If an attack is carried out over a period of time, it could cause damage to businesses that are not the primary target of the attack.”
In the event that a company is attacked on multiple systems, and the company is the primary victim of the cyberattack, the data could be recovered and the damage to other data centers could be significant.
“The damage to those other data center systems could be catastrophic, but we would not have any idea if it was,” Green added.
The study also noted that attacks on companies could be done remotely and with little or no attention to the damage.
It is not clear whether the attacks will be detected, or whether they will be taken seriously enough to warrant an immediate response.
“A lot of companies are moving to be more proactive in their cybersecurity,” said Jason Dorn, the director of cyber security strategy at Deloittes consultancy.
“A lot more companies are starting to take cyber security seriously, because they see that as a risk.”
In the case of Sony, Dorn said, the company should be taking the risk seriously.
“They could have had a breach, they could have been a victim of a data theft and they could still be hurt, but it would have been worse because the company could have lost valuable data and it could have caused them significant damage,” he said.
But that’s still not a good enough excuse for businesses.
“Some businesses that don’t need to worry as much about cyber threats because the damage would be so limited, the damage might be minimal,” said Dorn.
“But the fact that they are not, and they don’t know if they’re going to be attacked, that is a very important concern.”
The report, Cybersecurity: Risky business scenarios for 2016, noted that there are still a number of ways to attack a company, but that the most common methods are via phishing, phishing schemes and a breach that can be traced back to a server.
“There are ways to go to a remote server and get the data,” Green said.
“And you need to take the data and get a lot more people into that server, because it’s going to cause them a lot damage.
So it’s just not a viable option for most businesses.”
In other words, don’t be too worried about a cyber crime.
Just be vigilant.
